Plastics is the state's fourth largest manufacturing sector, employing nearly 7,000 workers.

West Virginia ranked first, fourth and 20th nationally in the number of plastics resin manufacturing, custom compounding resins and plastics fabrication workers per capita according to the 2002 Economic Census.

Plastics fabrication increased from 1,300 employees in 1990 to over 3,500 employees in 2004.
